Here’s why being Fearless is stupid (and what to do instead)

Fearless is a funny word. It’s a reckless kinda word, one that doesn’t give a crap what anyone thinks. Fearless is going for it. Fearless is wild abandon.

And it’s also kind of dumb. Here’s why:

You can do a lot of danger if you act from a place where you have no fear. I’ve only seen toddlers and drunk people act from this place – it’s not a feeling we regularly have. We are normally riddled with fears. Choked by them, stopped by them and haunted by them. I took 15 seconds and wrote down some of the things I’m scared of now at this moment:

  • Dying
  • Losing loved ones
  • Losing a limb
  • Of people not liking me
  • Of being “too much” to handle
  • Ghosts
  • Aliens
  • The dark

So WHY Fearless? Why the reckless stupidity of fearlessness?

Because I want to claim the word and break it open: fear less. What would you do with less fear in your life? If those negative inner voices got quiet enough for you to move into action? If you could get out of your own way once and for all and charge ahead, ready to succeed and ready if you fail?

I want to move you beyond fearless. I want to move you to a place that you didn’t think was real…your life, upgraded beyond recognition. So here is what you can do instead:

Focus your mind on your fears. Make a list like the one I did above. The more you know about your particular fear recipe, the sooner you can start diminishing the ones you have control over.

Now look over your list. What is real and what’? What is holding you back?

Your fears are real! And they are in your way. You can’t remove them…if you did, I’m thinking you would walk in front of a bus or take one too many reckless dives to make it very much longer. I want you to harness your fear, use it in a healthy way and diminish the sucker till it’s not stopping you anymore.

Want to seal in the learning? Rip up your list and repeat after me:

My failures don’t matter.
And neither do my fears.
I solemnly promise
To keep moving ahead.

No matter how small,
My actions matter and so do I.
